Henley Business School Achieves the 2010 IACC Code of Sustainability

April 6th, 2010
Henley Business School Achieves the 2010 IACC Code of Sustainability
By signing the IACC Code of Sustainability on an annual basis, members of the International Association of Conference Centers certify that their organization (1) has agreed to sustain and support IACC’s Environmental Policy; (2) has adopted and currently adheres to a certain percentage of the tenets of the code; and (3) willingly joins other member organizations in an association-wide effort to continually strive for greater sustainability.

Signing the Code of Sustainability demonstrates a level of commitment that far surpasses the adoption of some “green practices.” Rather, it is an affirmation that the property is actively engaged in a holistic endeavor that is woven into the fabric of the organization from top to bottom.

In addition to doing what’s right for the environment, those that have signed the code realize the three-fold benefits of being a sustainable property: environmental, social and economic.

The environmental benefits range from reducing an organization’s carbon footprint… to creating a better work environment… to improving the air and water quality of the property and the surrounding community.

Social benefits include better employee health and well-being; improved perception in the local community; becoming a positive contributor to the sustainability of the planet; and improving the quality of life for future generations. Another benefit is attracting high-quality employees and increased employee retention. This is especially true for employees under 40 years of age.

The economic benefits are increased productivity; cost savings in energy, water and supplies; attracting new business and building greater customer loyalty (planners are searching for venues that have certifications or sustainable programs); improved risk management and safety and the opportunity to collaborate with other innovative companies.

As an active member of the International Association of Conference Centers (IACC), the management and staff of this center, hereinafter referred to as “the organization,” agrees to sustain and support IACC’s Environmental Policy:
“IACC shall be a leader in creating environmental awareness among IACC-member properties and their clients. We do this by communicating the initiatives we have researched and identified as having a lesser environmental impact; by encouraging IACC members to adopt these environmentally responsible practices into their business operations and by continuous improvement to our own management efforts, all with the goal of reducing our carbon footprint and environmental impact.”

Henley Business School achieves coveted Environmental Award

January 25th, 2010

Henley Business School has achieved the coveted Environmental award, ISO 14001, for the Greenlands Campus, Henley on Thames. This international standard requires organisations to develop an integrated, structured approach in setting and achieving environmental policies and objectives with the goal of supporting protection of the environment, prevention of pollution and compliance with regulatory requirements.

With ever increasing pressure from stakeholders and authorities to address sustainability, independent certification to ISO14001 will undoubtedly enhance the competitive stance and environmental credibility of any organisation involved with corporate education.

Such is the case for Henley Business School which has recently shown its commitment to sustainable management by implementing ISO14001. “As one of the world’s leading business schools, we wanted to demonstrate to our students, staff and corporate clients that we have a robust environmental management system in place,” says Alan Brand, Director of Hotel and Estate Services

“Sustainable management is critical to our future business so it is imperative that our systems reflect best working practice and a commitment to sustainability”.

“The ISO14001 standard provides a structured and effective framework for us to do that,” continues Brand.  “The management system we have put in place is not just for our benefit, but has wider implications for society as a whole. ISO14001 gives us an opportunity to integrate a number of our initiatives into a formal structure allowing us to be economically viable in a truly sustainable way.”

The implementation of any management system can seem somewhat daunting, both in terms of resource and time required, however Henley Business School was able to build upon activities and processes already in place within the organisation. “Adoption of ISO14001 was easy in some ways as we do so much of the work already,” says Brand.

“However we knew that to achieve certification to ISO14001 we would need a facilitator with knowledge of our business.  We therefore appointed Philip Catlow of Catlow Consulting who had worked with us on a number of projects. We also needed independent assessment to prove the credibility of our achievements and we selected BSI who are the National Standards Body of the UK, with a globally recognised reputation for independence, integrity and innovation in the production of standards that promote best practice.
